📱 Playing Safe Online: Understanding Netball NSW’s Social Media Policy

At Mayfield Netball Club, we pride ourselves on being more than just a sports club — we’re a supportive community. Whether you're a player, parent, coach, umpire, or volunteer, your safety and wellbeing — both on and off the court — matter deeply to us. That includes how we interact online.
In today's world, social media is a huge part of life. From sharing game day snaps to cheering on teammates, it helps keep us connected. But it’s also a space where harm can occur if we’re not careful. That’s why Netball NSW has introduced its Social Media Policy — and it applies to all of us here at Mayfield.
---
Why Does This Policy Matter?
The policy helps protect everyone involved in netball from online abuse, bullying, discrimination, and inappropriate content. It recognises that keeping our club safe means staying safe in digital spaces too — including platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, as well as emails and group chats used for club purposes.
It outlines what’s considered unacceptable behaviour online and what to do if something goes wrong. Importantly, it also makes clear that content posted to social media (especially when related to Netball NSW or clubs like ours) can have real-life consequences.
---
When Does It Apply?
The policy kicks in when a member, player, parent, coach, or other participant shares something online that:
Harms or could harm the reputation of Netball NSW or Mayfield Netball Club;
Harasses, bullies, discriminates, or threatens another person;
Shares inappropriate or explicit material;
Involves cyber abuse or unsafe contact with children or young people.
Even if something is posted outside of netball activities, if it relates to or reflects on our club, the policy may apply.
---
Real Life Example – A Breach
Imagine a player shares a video from a Saturday match and includes offensive language about an opponent in the caption. Even if they think it's a joke, this could be considered cyber abuse or bullying — a clear breach of the policy.
---
Real Life Example – Doing the Right Thing
On the flip side, a parent shares a photo of their child receiving the "Player of the Week" award and tags the club with a positive message about sportsmanship. That’s a fantastic example of using social media to build up our community in a respectful and safe way.
---
What Should You Do if Something Goes Wrong?
If you or your child ever feel unsafe online, or you see something concerning, don’t ignore it:
1. Take screenshots or collect evidence.
2. Report it to the social media platform and then contact us at Mayfield for support at info@mayfieldnetball.com.au.
3. If the issue involves child safety, contact the police immediately.
